Phrasal verbs
Sabemos que el inglés posee una curva de aprendizaje rápida. Es decir, es posible tener un nivel medio con más o menos bastante facilidad, ya que las construcciones verbales no entrañan una gran dificultad y la construcción de afirmativas, negativas e interrogativas suelen regirse por unas normas más o menos sencillas.
Sin embargo, como dice el refrán: “en todos sitios cuecen habas”. Y estaréis de acuerdo con nosotros que cuando llega la parte de los Phrasal Verbs (verbos frasales o verbos compuestos en español) esto cambia.
Desde un punto de vista gramatical, una Phrasal Verbs es la unión de un verbo con una proposición la cual le va a dar un nuevo significado al verbo. En muchas ocasiones esta preposición tiene sentido, pero en otros muchos no. Veámoslo con un ejemplo:
- Sit = Sentar
- Down = Bajarse / abajo
- Sit down = Sentarse (Estar de pie y sentarnos)
Aquí podemos observar cierta lógica y podemos más o menos averiguar su significado. Sin embargo en otras circunstancia no es tan sencillo.
- Look: Mirar
- Forward = Hacia delante / Adelante
- To = a
- Look forward to = Esperar algo con muchas ganas
Como podemos ver, el significado de este phrasal verb no tiene mucho que ver con el significado de las partes de las que se compone.
Ejemplos de phrasal verbs
1. Base on
Traducción: “Basarse; Tener base en”
Ejemplos:
Prices are based on two people sharing a room.
This film is based on a true story.
2. Break down
Traducción: “Averiarse; Dejar de funcionar”
Ejemplo:
The car broke down only 20km away from their destination.
3. Break up
Traducción: “Separarse; Terminar; Romperse”
Ejemplos:
The ship broke up on the rocks.
School breaks up at the end of June.
4. Call for
Traducción: “Ir a buscar; Merecer”
Ejemplos:
I’ll call for you at 7pm.
You’ve passed your exam…This calls for a celebration!
5. Carry on
Traducción: “Continuar”
Ejemplo:
He carried on walking despite the rain.
6. Check in
Traducción: “Registrarse”
Ejemplo:
They checked in to a hotel.
7. Come on
Traducción: “Venga”
Ejemplo:
Come on or we’ll miss the bus!
8. Cut up
Traducción: “Cortar en pedazos”
Ejemplo:
She cut up the cake into small pieces.
9. End up
Traducción: “Resultar; Acabar”
Ejemplo:
He plans to end up working as an accountant.
10. Fill up
Traducción: Llenar hasta arriba
Ejemplo:
He filled up the car with petrol.
11. Get along with
Traducción: “Llevarse (bien con alguien)”
Ejemplo:
How do you get along with your sister?
12. Get down
Traducción: “Bajar”
“For the following exercise you need to get down on the floor”
13. Get off
Traducción: “Bajarse”
Ejemplo:
“You need to get off the bus two stops before the Cathedral.”
14. Get on
Traducción: “Subirse”
Ejemplo:
“I turned off my mobile phone before I got on the plane.”
15. Get rid of
Traducción: “Deshacerse de”
Ejemplo:
“I recommend you get rid of these old clothes before you move”
16. Give back
Traducción: “Devolver”
Ejemplo:
Remember to give the keys back to Reception desk before you leave.
17. Give up
Traducción: “Dejar un hábito; Dejar de hacer algo; Rendirse”
Ejemplo:
You really should consider giving up smoking.
18. Go for
Traducción: “Elegir; Decantarse por”
Ejemplo:
Instead of butter, I always go for olive oil.
19. Go on
Traducción: “Seguir; Continuar”
Ejemplo:
The meeting went on until six o’clock.
20. Grow up
Traducción: “Crecer”
Ejemplo:
I grew up in a small town in the South of Spain.
21. Hand in
Traducción: “Entregar”
Ejemplo:
Please, hand in your reports before 1pm.
22. Hang out
Traducción: “Pasar el rato”
Ejemplo:
Young people love to hang out with friends till late.
23. Hold up
Traducción: “Hacer esperar; Retrasar”
Ejemplo:
Finish your task, please. You are holding everyone up.
24. Keep on
Traducción: “No parar; Continuar”
Ejemplo:
The speaker kept on talking for two more hours.
25. Keep up
Traducción: “Mantener; Seguir el ritmo”
Ejemplo:
Keep up the good work!
26. Knock down
Traducción: “Atropellar; Tirar abajo”
Ejemplo:
That tree was knocked down by a car last year.
27. Look after
Traducción: “Cuidar”
Ejemplo:
My parents look after my house when I am on holiday.
28. Look at
Traducción: “Mirar”
Ejemplo:
Look at the blackboard please.
29. Look for
Traducción: “Buscar”
Ejemplo:
I’m looking for my sister, I know she is in this building.
30. Look forward to
Traducción: “Tener ganas de”
Ejemplo:
I’m looking forward to the party!
31. Look out
Traducción: ¡Ten cuidado!
Ejemplo:
Look out! There’s a car coming.
32. Look up
Traducción: “Buscar en un listado”
Ejemplo:
If you don’t know the meaning on a word, you can look it up in the dictionary.
33. Pick up
Traducción: “Recoger”
Ejemplo:
I’m picking up my sister from the station this afternoon.
34. Put down
Traducción: “Apuntar; Anotar”
Ejemplo:
You can put down the material you need in this form.
35. Put off
Traducción: “Aplazar”
Ejemplo:
Many concerts have been put off after the coronavirus outbreak
36. Put through
Traducción: “Poner al teléfono”
Ejemplo:
Could you put me through to the library manager, please.
37. Put up
Traducción: “Instalar”
Ejemplo:
The are putting up new street signs.
38. Set off
Traducción: “Partir; Ponerse en marcha”.
Ejemplo:
They set off very early to avoid waking in the morning during the hottest hours.
39. Set up
Traducción: “Configurar”
Ejemplo:
I can help you set up your camera to take good pictures in low light.
40. Tidy up
Traducción: “Limpiar; Recoger; Organizar”
Ejemplo:
I love to cook, but not so much to tidy up the kitchen afterwards.
